Piercings can take anywhere from a few weeks to many months to heal. Time depends on location, anatomy, jewelry, grooming and overall health. The fact that the piercing has stopped hurting does not mean that the canal has fully healed. The given dates are approximate, and it is best to precede the change of jewelry with a check-up with a piercer.

Why do different piercings heal at different rates?

The earlobe, cartilage, nose and mouth area differ in structure, blood supply and exposure to movement and pressure. Cartilage usually needs more time and protection from pressure.

Piercings around the mouth are additionally exposed to movement of jewelry and contact with the oral environment.

What can prolong healing?

Healing may be prolonged by: frequent touching, sleeping on the piercing, snagging, inappropriate jewelry and changing jewelry too early. Individual characteristics of the body and health status are also important.

Care should follow recommendations tailored to a given piercing. Aggressive home experiments may further irritate the canal.

When is a consultation needed?

Increasing severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, extensive redness, fever or a marked deterioration in well-being require urgent medical evaluation.

If you have problems with the arrangement or size of jewelry, it is worth consulting an experienced piercer. If you suspect an infection, do not remove jewelry yourself without consultation.

What should a future piercer teach the client?

The piercer should provide clear recommendations, plan follow-up and recognize alarm signals without making a medical diagnosis. He should teach these competences post-procedure care module.

Why the healing chart is sometimes misunderstood

The approximate interval is not a promise that after the interval you can change your jewelry or stop protecting the place. The tissue may appear calm from the outside, although the canal is still easily irritated.

Instead of just providing a number of weeks or months, the piercer should discuss the stages of healing, the timing of follow-up and the criteria for further decision-making. Thanks to this, the customer does not change jewelry just because the date on the calendar has passed.
